Different decoration techniques have their origin. For instance, the Japanese Cloisonne is an ancient art that was used to decorate metal vessels in the 1830s. Artistes used this technique to create highly compartmentalized designs that were soldered using metal wires. They filled the compartments with colored metal then passed them through fire and finally polished them. Objects that are decorated or embellished with this intricate design are called cloisonne. Originally, this art was used to adorn small items. People had not started using it to generate income. Around the year 1833, a Samurai by the name Kaji Tsunekich who lived in Nagoya in the province of Omwari started looking for a way to supplement the meager official salary. This Samurai took a piece of the ornament and examined how the artists from China were making it. Later, he was able to produce a little enamel dish.

Kaji learned every trick, and by late 1850s, he was an expert of the art. He could make objects and sell them to get income. He then decided to start teaching some people from his province. He became appointed as the chief official maker and designer from his region. The manufacture of the artifacts became very popular during the time till today.

This made Nagoya and the surrounding areas to become famous due to their innovative techniques. These artisans could make beautiful objects that people could never have imagined possible. Later, many centers started designing ornamental items, which were awe-inspiring in many regions. With time, almost every province in Japan became manufacturers of the beautiful cloisonne items.

From very simple beginnings in Nagoya, Omwari province in the 1830s, this complex art became widely known. During the late 19th century, this art greatly expanded and became the primary income generating activity in Japan. Additionally, Japan became a major exporter of the ornamental products to many parts of the world.
