Planning Your Harpeth River Kayak Adventure

By William Watson

The great outdoors is something that beckons to everyone, especially in this day and age of concrete jungles. Many have taken to kayaking and camping apart from the regular RV and hiking trips out there. If you are of the former persuasion then a Harpeth River kayak adventure trip or package may be the one for you. Should you feel that the adventure package just mentioned be the one for you, then do read on for more information.

Prior to making any vacation plans or trip itinerary, then it may be a good idea for you to have some form of checklist to help you out. It will be of great assistance in making you keep track of things you need to do, and help you iron out kinks in your plans which may give you a headache later on. When making travel plans you should always use a checklist to help you in organizing.

First thing to do is to find out more about the river that you will be on, which in this case is the Harpeth river. It is a river that forms the Mississippi watershed along with the other rivers of the Ohio and the Cumberland and is approximately 115 miles long. Do find out more about where the locations of the entry points are, both state and local, and also the whereabouts of the most hazardous areas are which contain the strongest currents and water rapids.

On average a kayaking trip with a bit of camping then it will last around two to three days. These three days will have its own fair share of medium to hard physical exertion so it is not really for the timid or faint of heart. If you are already in your forties, it may actually be a good idea to see you doctor first and see if they can clear you for tow to three days of fairly sustained exertion. This is particularly true if you have some sort of heart condition you are concerned about.

The next step that you should take will be to look for a guide who is experienced in the area. When you do look for one it is more important to look at safety records given a certain number of trips, as this will attest to their overall ability. Also get a guide who is well versed in the local history so that he or she can make your trip that more colorful and interesting.

Gauge the relative ability of yourself or the group you will be traveling with. If this is basically your first time then you will want to keep a path along the river that is devoid of water rapids and fast currents. These rough patches of water will usually occur where tributaries are present, particularly where the Little Harpeth joins the main waterway south of Nashville.

It is also a good idea to plan as a group if you are traveling in one prior to beginning. Have a group discussion of what everyone wants to accomplish. Do this so no one will feel left out and also feel that they have been forced into certain activities.

This article has pretty much summed up some of the considerations you need to think about so as to make your trip more enjoyable Also do further research into what equipment you will need and how to acquire them.
