Concepts Regarding Loose Slug Control

By Helen Nelson

Slugs are meticulously correlated to snails however they differ from them as they do not have an external shell. They basically are known to feed mostly on seedlings as well as vegetables, flowers and ornamentals however, they are considered injurious to sprouts. Just as the snails are known to leave a trail of slime the slugs are also identified by the slime they leave behind on walks or around the house. They can as well feed on vegetables kept in the house and other foodstuffs. This editorial gives in depth information on loose slug control.

Many gardeners have been advised to have ponds near their gardens especially in areas where the pests are dense. The ponds attract frogs and other animals. The ponds will eliminate the pests as most of these animals are known to feed on the slugs and snails. The presence of the frogs in the gardens will eradicate the manifestation of this pests.

Another major way of culturally controlling these annoying pests is shifting from sprinkler irrigation to drip irrigation. Many may wonder how this works but it is mainly done to reduce humidity. When using the sprinkler the water sprinkles into unnecessary places such as the branches thus becoming humid and susceptible to attract these animals.

It is imperative to note that these pests hibernate during the cold season as most animals do. They mostly hibernate on top soil or on dewy vegetation so as to keep their slime together. Places with mild temperatures such as the coastal locations the pests can be active through the year as lpong as there is food availability and they are not being disturbed.

There is also another method of control that is recommended by experts and it involves putting up a strip of metal around the garden. These pests do not like to crawl over metal as it damages their bodies. A strip of electrical cable can also work well in ensuring that the pests do not invade your garden. Egg shells have also worked for some homeowners and because this is a natural method most gardeners prefer it.

As it was started above handpicking these pests can be effective if done thoroughly and consistently. It is imperative that if you are using this method to be very careful and mostly pay attention to their hiding places. To be able to pick them with ease water the garden during the afternoon then trace them during the night as they will be active then.

In this account it crucial to note that these pests have no teeth consequently, they rasp on food such as vegetables and you can barely hear them eat unless it is very quiet. Specialists claim that the mature slugs are the most active pests in destroying vegetables as the old ones feed on compost.

Conclusively, it is important to note that over the years most homeowners have used salt sprinkling method as a quicker way to eliminate the pests. However this is highly not recommended as the salt may affect your plants. The salt will keep away the animals for some time but without an effective control measure the animals will be back.
