Tips On How To Sew A Straight Edge

By Amy Rogers

A lot of people think that sewing is an easy task, but nope, it most definitely is not. People who have sewn for a long time already and have come to love it will tell you that letting that thread go through the eye of a needle is just the tip of the iceberg. Sewing can be fun but it takes a lot of patience and hard work to perfect.

The hardest thing would most probably be sewing straightly and neatly, even when you are making use of a machine. As with other things, one needs to be familiar with the things that one needs to utilize in order to better understand their functions. A few pointers will be given below on how to sew a straight edge.

First things first, be sure that you are not in an awkward or difficult position when you are dealing with your machine. One key thing to remember is sitting straight and by that, you also have to be in a straight line with your apparatus. This will help you in sewing straighter and better.

Look out for seam allowance markings that are present on your machine plate. They were originally placed there to help you determine the correct allowance but following that can also help you sew in a straighter manner. However, not all machines are equipped with such, like vintage ones so you may have to improvise or make one on your own.

One can always improvise and use your resources such as tapes that can be stuck to the plate of the equipment so that you will have a marking or indicator. Check for tapes with solid colors or patterns as transparent ones are hard to spot or see. An improvised indicator will also let you place custom seam allowances.

A lot of people do this mistake often and that is watching the needle while they are sewing. If you look at the needle, chances are, you will no longer notice or be able to follow the straight line marked by your tape or markings. Such habit can also hurt your eye and head in the long run as the needle movement may cause you to be dizzy.

As a beginner, following the tape or seam allowance indicator can still be very challenging and if so, you can always resort to another means like drawing a straight line on the fabric. Use fabric pens that are soluble so and make sure to test them on scrap cloth. The solid, visible line will help you sew a straight line better because there is a clear guide that you can follow.

One thing also that is very common among people who have just started such is that they seem to be a little jittery and speed up even when there is no need to. If you are a starter, it does not hurt to slow down and ensure that what you are doing is right. Always remember that you are in control of the machine and not the other way around.

The things that look like they are the easiest to do can sometimes be the ones which are actually hard to accomplish. However, with the things above, one may be able to do the task without much difficulty. Do not give up and remember that practice makes perfect.
