Information About Cavalier King Puppies

By Betty Murphy

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel refers to a toy dog according to the KCA classification. The breed owes its origin to the United Kingdom and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in many countries. Starting in the year 2000, the popularity of the dog has grown enormously in the United States to a point that it ranks 18th as the most popular pure-breed dog in the United States. Cavalier King puppies are a perfect choice for anyone looking to buy a dog.

From history, these dogs were lap dogs and tinier for spaniels. Their sizes when full grown was smaller for spaniel breeds. The height of a standard full-grown one is supposed to be 12-13 inches. The weight range lies between 10-18 pounds for mature adults. The coat grows to a moderate height whereas the appearance is silky. Coats are allowed to have a little wave, but they should not be curly. No docking is done to the tail.

There is feathering on the ears, tails, feet, and legs of cavalier Kings that have grown to adulthood. The feathered feet is a particularly crucial feature of this breed. Cavaliers are usually confused with English Toy Spaniels by most people because they have several features in common. The two breeds existed as one until 100 years ago when they started to diverge. Difference in facial features and body weight are the main differences.

The breed has four recognized coat colors. In the first color, the body is white but there are rich chestnut markings. Dogs with these colors are called Blenheim. The name was given after Blenheim Palace. In the second color, the body has a chestnut spot at the center of the forehead. This spot is called the Blenheim spot.

The third color is comprised of black and tan where the body is black, but has tan highlights on the cheeks, eyebrows, tail, and legs. The black and tan dogs are called King Charles. The last color is referred to as tricolor. Tricolor Cavaliers have black and white bodies with tan markings on their eyebrows, inner legs, tails, ears, and cheeks. This fourth color is called Prince Charles.

The breed usually tries hard to make its owned happy. It is also playful, affectionate, and patient. These qualities are good for a family dog. They socialize well with other breeds, children, and pets. They are great at adapting to new locations, environments, and families. People raise them in country settings as well as cities.

The breed is the 44th most intelligent breed in the world. They learn obedience and working training drills fast. Also, they are great at sports. They have shown great success in agility, conformation shows, and obedience training. They make good therapy dogs because of their sweet nature and gentleness. One can take them on long walks without having to worry.

Cavalier King like chasing after moving objects, including vehicles. This makes them not very wise in the streets when not under supervision. They also become friends with anybody, including strangers. Thus they are poor as guard dogs. However, they are a threat to birds and small pets because of their strong hunting instincts.
