Stem Cell Therapy Centers May One Day Save Many Lives

By Ruth Carter

The dizzying pace at which progress is made in the medical field is truly astonishing. New treatment options, procedures, medicines and tools are becoming available all the time. Many diseases that used to mean almost certain death have now been conquered. Research continues at an unabated pace and there is no reason to doubt that many more diseases will be brought under control very soon. For example, stem cell therapy centers promise medical breakthroughs such as the world has never seen.

Bone marrow transplants have been around for longer than thirty years. Up to now, this type of treatment were limited to patients suffering from diseases of the blood, such as leukaemia and lymphoma. Patients that receive chemotherapy often lack enough healthy cells and bone marrow transplants can encourage the body to produce new and healthy cells to replace the ones killed by the chemotherapy. It also helps to strengthen the immune system.

Bone marrow transplants may not be a cure for patients with cancer, but there is ample proof that it adds years to their life expectancy. Researchers hope that this form of treatment will become a cure, not just for cancer but also for many other medical conditions. Progress is made steadily, but it is a long and difficult road until a stage will be reached where more advanced tests can be performed on human patients.

One major focus area of researchers is diseases that cause the brain to degenerate, such as Parkinson and Alzheimer. They believe that this treatment will eventually be able to reverse brain damage caused by these diseases, strokes, severe injuries to the spine and physical brain injuries. This will give numerous people a new lease on life and make a vast impact of the quality of life of patients that have no options at present.

Another possible application of these transplants is the treatment of a variety of heart diseases, currently one of the most common health problems in developed countries. Eventually, bone marrow transplants will cause damaged heart muscles to be replaced by the growth of new cells and blood vessels inside the heart. Sadly, this promising use of bone marrow transplants are still far into the future.

Not everyone is excited about the potential benefits of bone marrow transplants. There are those that say that this treatment method is almost certain to lead to highly unethical medical practices. This is because it is common practice to use blood from the umbilical cords of babies not yet born in the place of actual bone marrow during transplants. Critics say this may lead to a situation where women will become pregnant solely to become donors.

Critics also complain that there is too much hype about the future potential of bone marrow transplants. They say that positive results are still years away and that researchers are falsely creating the impression that major breakthroughs will be made in the near future. They also say that places that already offer this treatment do it for no reason other than money, knowing that the treatment is extremely risky.

Researchers agree that there is still an enormous amount of work to be done before bone marrow transplants can become commonplace. They are adamant, however, that this type of treatment will become one of the biggest breakthroughs the medical field has ever see. One hope that they are right.
