The Responsible Way To Scrap My Car

By Edward Morris

It sometimes seems as if there are abandoned cars everywhere. Along the highways, in parking lots and in suburbs it is no uncommon to spot obviously abandoned cars left at the side of the road. This is illegal, of course. These cars are ugly sights and they may even prove to be a risk to traffic, to people and to animals. There are legal ways to get rid of an unwanted vehicle. When someone wants to scrap my car they need to follow the proper procedures.

Even when a vehicle is completely wrecked it is still necessary to have the title deed and other documentation at hand when getting rid of it. If these documents have been lost, an application for copies will have to be made with the relevant authorities. This is important, because the last registered owner of abandoned cars will be held legally responsible for any cost incurred or any injury caused by the vehicle.

Most junkyards are willing to buy cars in any condition. They will not pay much, however, and they may even charge a towing fee. This is nevertheless the easiest and fastest way in which to get rid of an unwanted vehicle and to earn at least some cash. The best course of action is to approach several junkyards and to compare their offers before making a final decision.

If there is no urgency to get rid of the vehicle, it may be well worth the effort to strip it for parts and accessories. Even totally wrecked cars have parts that are still serviceable and the accessories, such as the rims, the sound system the seats and other trimmings may have more value than one might imagine.

In many cases the best course of action is to invest in some repairs in order to get the unwanted vehicle in a proper running condition. If it can be sold as a roadworthy vehicle, a substantial profit can be made. There are always buyers for low budget wheels. Junkyards know this and that is why they buy wrecks for cheap, fix them up and sell them to those that cannot afford another form of transport.

Certain makes and models of cars are sought after by collectors and hobbyist that enjoy restoring cars to their original condition. Such potential buyers often do not care whether the vehicle is in a running condition or not. There are many internet sites where these buyers advertise their needs and while it may take some time to find a buyer, it may be well worth it.

Even those that are not interested in earning money while getting rid of their cars can still act responsibly. Many institutions training mechanics are only too happy to have them. Some artists also specialize in turning wrecks into works of art. There are even marine organizations that use wrecks to create safe breeding grounds for fish. A wreck can even be turned into a playground feature.

Nobody should ever consider leaving their unwanted junk in a public place where it may pose a risk to others. Unwanted cars are littering the countryside and the suburbs and children play in them and animals shelter there, often getting hurt in the process. The responsible course of action is the only honorable way to go.
