How Augmented Reality Military Is Utilized By The Army

By Jerry Burns

Presently, several industries hoping to expand with technology have begun working on the idea of augmented reality. Unlike virtual reality that totally shifts the perception of users and their surroundings, augmented reality only builds around the actual real life setting that a user is in. Augmented reality military, marketing, medicine, video games, social media, and television include the long list of industries that are taking advantage of the applications of AR.

The common applications of AR that many people are familiar with are photo filters. If a person looks into a camera using a social media application, animations like dog ears, hearts, or shades appear on the screen as if they were actually worn by the person in real life. Other than photo filters, there also several practical applications of AR that help enhance training exercises, marketing and promotion, and even medical procedures.

An example of an extremely important function of AR is revolutionizing military training by providing authentic simulations of war for military personnel and soldiers about to be stationed in chaotic locations. Before soldiers are deployed, they first have to pass rigorous training. This includes grueling physical exercises, target practice, endurance tests, and team competitions.

Without a doubt, none of these come close to the actual experience of being on the field. A thousand stories can be spoken of about bombs blasting in the distance or debris falling everywhere, but these stories are ultimately incapable of duplicating the sensation of being present amidst all the chaos. Only augmented reality can provide the most authentic simulations of actual events that occur on the field.

The military has been trying to come up with augmented reality interfaces for years. The first applications of AR for troops were used in flight training where map overlays of satellite tracks were relayed to fighter pilots. Today, wearable equipment like glasses and headsets that will provide key information involving parameters and movements of allied troops and enemy forces are currently in development.

Information about enemy troops can be relayed to soldiers without obscuring their vision so they can still maintain awareness of their physical surroundings. Military vehicles may even be equipped with AR in the future. Soldiers inside tanks can maneuver around sensitive locations and arm themselves without ever lifting the top and making themselves vulnerable to gunfire. Moreover, bombs near the area can be detected while the vehicle is still several meters away.

The heads up display is a helmet mounted system that displays critical information onto the viewpoint of a soldier. It is the pioneering augmented reality system that can already be tested by the United States Army in 2019. The exact location of enemies and friendlies can be located even in stressful situations.

This will allow them to strategically plan combat or defense tactics with the rest of the unit and carry them out swiftly. The information relayed can be extremely vital during operations taken out at night. Problems like bombarding the soldier with too much data or how to make the display tough enough to withstand field use are still being addressed.

Funding for research and experiments is currently being delivered in order to develop further utilizations of augmented reality in the military and in any other industry. People often choose to give emphasis to the negative aspects of technology but fail to recognize all that it has contributed to various aspects of many industries. In fact, looking forward into the future with developments in advanced technology is quite the privilege.
