How The Adirondack Chairs Arizona Homeowners Prize Became Classics

By Karen Jones

Some furniture pieces are timeless. They never go out of fashion, look dated, or out of place. American furniture created during the Craftsman period are great examples of this. Nothing exemplifies this period more than the Adirondack chairs Arizona natives love so much. A genuine Adirondack is a prized possession for those who love strong, simple, elegant design. They are also an interesting part of American history.

The Craftsman period began around the turn of the twentieth century in direct response to the Victorian Era. Certain artisans decided furniture should be functional as well as decorative. Thomas Lee, who owned a summer home on Lake Champlain, needed some outdoor furniture. Instead of buying armchairs, he decided to make his own. What he came up with was low seated, deeply angled, with wide armrests.

The story could have ended there if Harry Bunnell, a family friend had not happened by. Bunnell ran a local carpentry shop and needed some money to carry him through until the spring. Lee offered Bunnell his chair plans, and Bunnell took the it from there. He eventually patented his product as the Westport Chair. If you can find an original Westport today, you will need about three thousand dollars to purchase it.

There are numerous variations of the Adirondack on the market today. The original design is best known as the classic. It has the spacious seat that is low to the ground and angles down and back. It has the wide armrests, and a back that is tall and slopes back. The best examples are made out of cedar today. The first armchairs were made out of basswood and hemlock.

There are rockers in the style of Adirondacks. These are a lot more comfortable than the old, stiff backed rockers with narrow seats. One of these rockers on your front porch is an invitation to relax and while away the afternoon. You can find benches and loungers that copy this style. Craftsmen have created ottomans and tables in the same style to accompany the armchairs.

There are modern variations of this classic chair. One of them is called the Uwharrie Chair. This rendition has a wavy stylized back. The rest of the chair is pretty similar to the classic. The Uwharrie is made out of pine. If you like the modern look, one of these will set you back six hundred or more dollars.

This furniture was, and still is, built to last. Most craftsmen prefer to make their pieces out of white or western red cedar. Cedar is a perfect wood for outdoor furniture. It withstands all kinds of weather. Depending on your taste, you can buy the chair in its natural state or painted to match your outdoor decor.

The Craftsman Period is considered the greatest American furniture making period in history. The pieces that came out of it are deceptively simple and extremely functional. The Adirondack armchairs are built to fit the human body which makes them as comfortable as they are beautiful.
