The Industrial Uses Of A Steel Grit And A Steel Shot

By Carl Cooper

Abrasives are some types of a particle which are made from steel and are commonly used peening media or as abrasives. Most often, these are divided in 2 different shapes, the grit and the shot. These 2 shapes are addressed for different purposes in industrial applications.

Most of the abrasives are made from steel compositions and are consist of high carbon. This high carbon is said to be the very best deal between the mechanical efficiency, durability, and properties. These abrasives have its most important properties which are the grain shape and size, cleanliness, hardness, and toughness. Los Angeles steel grit usually characterizes the grains with angular shapes that are predominant. These grains can be obtained through crushing the shots, thus, resulting to having some sharp edges and as well some broken sections. These have different hardness and sizes.

Steel shots are spherical grains made of molten steels. It is produced by using the granulation process or the atomization process. The grains also have different hardness and as well as the sizes. A shot is often utilized for a shots blasting machine.

These 2 type have both the properties of being recyclable. Usually, the recyclability property ranges from 2000 to 3000 cycles. And since the level of recyclability is high, it can generate much lesser waste if compared to some other types of abrasives that are expendable, and thus, it result to having good impact to environment. Another property for both is hardness where in the level ranges ranges from 40 up to 65.

These abrasive types are being used in many industrial applications in Los Angeles, CA but the four most common are for cleaning, surface preparation, stone cutting, and shot peening. For cleaning applications, these are used for removing loose materials on the surfaces of metals. This kind of application is commonly uses in the automotive industries for the cylinder heads, motor blocks, etc. For surface preparation, it includes the operations of cleaning surfaces that are covered with dirt, paint coatings, mill scale, or rust. And also, for modifying surfaces like creating roughness so that the paint and the coating can be applied better.

Grits are used to cut hard stones such as granite and these are used by multi blade large frames when cutting thinner and cutting smaller slices of blocks. Shot peening are processes for metal surfaces to strike it against hard shot particles. Peening may result to deforming the surfaces but it makes an improved metal durability.

Aside from the shot peening, cleaning, and surface preparation, other applications are also utilized by other industry types. These applications include repair, renovations, and other processes involved in construction. The 2 processes or operations where in the abrasives are utilized are blasting and machining.

Blasting is an operation where in an abrasive material is propelled forcibly against any surfaces which are under a high pressure. This is done either to roughen a smooth surface, or remove the contaminants in the surface, smoothen a rough surface, or shape a surface. The pressurized fluid will propel the material.

The operation of machining removes the material from work pieces using the small particles of an abrasive. Examples on this process are polishing, grinding, and honing. These may be expensive types of processes but its finishes are better and also its tolerance.
