Setting Up A 300 Wide Tire Kit

By Cynthia Allen

Riding motorcycles is fun and exciting. More and more bikes are coming with the larger fat tires as part of the stock setup. However, those that have older bikes or ones that they might want to modify with the fat tires on the back can easily customize them by getting a 300 wide tire kit. This allows you to save the cost of buying a new bike, but still have better stability and great look.

There are several components included. It will contain a wider swing arm and larger fender to be able to accommodate the bigger wheel. Offset gears and other components are usually included as well. The tires and wheels usually aren't, though some providers may allow a tire selection with the order. The fenders are usually stainless steel so they are ready for paint to match the rest of the paint job on the bike.

Building your own kit has advantages and disadvantages. If you're willing to spend a lot of money, you can definitely build your own. Each part will need to be ordered and you'll have to make sure they all go together. This allows you to get a total custom looking sets. The best idea for most is to get the kit that is the size you want. All the main pieces are included and ready for custom paint jobs to match the bike. The fender is usually stainless steel and ready to be painted.

The two most popular sizes are the 300 and 240. The 240 is the oldest size for a fat back. This was the first size put when someone had the idea of using a bigger tire on the back. The 300 is the most popular size today. Both will do, you just need to be sure you get the right wheel for the one you order.

The wheel and tire have to be ordered by themselves. Though some may provide a selection of tires, it is usually preferable to order one that matches your front. The same goes for the wheel. This one won't be provided because there are too many choices for a provider to be able to include it. They are visible pieces that you want to match the rest of the bike.

Installing it yourself is possible. These come with a great set of instructions and are fairly easy to install if you have worked on bikes before. If you are not familiar with the process, then you definitely want to have a professional bike mechanic do the installation. Putting the parts on wrong can be a serious safety issue, so before you dive in and do it yourself, make sure you know what you're doing.

Take the bike for a test ride. If you install the components yourself, take the bike into the parking lot or just nearby your garage. Test the brakes and gears and have someone watch while you ride around in circles. If there is any wobble to the wheel or other things don't seem quite right, fix them or take the bike to a mechanic. You do not want to ride full speed until you are sure everything is installed perfectly.

Fat wheels are the in-thing with bikes right now. They offer a great look and stability that the thinner wheels didn't have. Most of the popular bikes include the fat wheels and upgrading it can be a breeze.
