Tips To Improve Pencil Grasp And Tripod Grasp

By Deborah Nelson

Getting preschoolers to hold their pencils correctly is a bit of work. There are many fun ways in which you can improve pencil grasp and tripod grasp. These activities help in promoting strong hand and finger muscles that are required for handwriting. In this article, you shall be provided with ways that will help with the process.

You may practice using tweezers. Practice with them by using three fingers on a tweezers sand the two remaining tucked in. If facing a hard time with the remaining fingers, provide them with something to hold. Using tweezers is fun during snacking because young kids love snacks. Grapes, popcorn, and raisins can also be used.

While coloring you should consider breaking the crayons into small pieces. Smaller crayons will encourage grasp. You also need to encourage them to release their little finger and let it rest on the page while they are writing and coloring. This action stabilizes their hand. A mini stylus used on a phone or tablet is also important in naturally encouraging grasp since it works the same as small crayons.

Consider focusing on pincer grasp activities. Pincer grasp is utilizing the index and thumb fingers to either pinch or grab an object. Use beads, hard candy or other round objects that require to be pinched. Playing with clay can also help. Manipulating, molding, pinching and squeezing clay with fingers will strengthen the muscles that are required for grasping.

You also should think about visual motor skills. Part of handwriting entails visual motor aspects. Lacing of cards, forming shapes with blocks, puzzles, and mazes are important. Finger warming up activities should also be done. Prior to writing certain activities can warm up fingers. The toddlers can move their fingers in upwards and downwards on a pencil to assist wakening of the muscles for the fingers to be ready to write.

Another action entails pinching clothespins. It works by hardening muscles important for grasping. There are others that may open when a specific amount of squeezing is applied. Stringing beads can also be tried out. It makes both of the hands to work since one of it holds a string and the other beads. It is good for the crossing of mid-line and bilateral coordination. Since it may be difficult for the young ones, they can use larger beads and a wider string like a shoelace.

Another activity includes marble transfer. It works perfectly by using tongs and fingers. You first need to look for two containers. One of them needs to have a small opening. Supervise the child as they grab one marble after the other transferring it to another container. To add on this, another action they can do is peeling of stickers from books.

Playing cards and boarding games can also help. There are many board games to be tried out. Most of them require small pieces to be moved on the board while the children are playing. Card games are appropriate for practicing with older kids. All these are recommended activities which can help with time. Dedicate some time for practicing every day.
