Information On IEP California Residents Should Know

By Lisa Stewart

An IEP is simply an individualized education program. It is a document that defines the scope of education and other services for a child with special needs who has been enrolled to a public school. Each of them is designed and customized with the aim of meeting the unique needs of the student. When planning for an iep California parents and residents in general need to know a number of things relating to this document.

One of the most important roles of this document is that it specifies the role of each player involved in the education process of the student. These include teachers, parents and school administrators. All of them are able to work together in coordinated fashion for the good of the student. Without it, the quality of education provided would not be assured.

Creation of an IEP is by all the stakeholders. They all participate in looking at the existing needs of a student and formulate solutions to these problems. In many cases, the child is also part of this process. There are some variations from one country to another. In the United States, the creation of IEP guidelines has to follow the procedure laid out in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, IDEA.

Before creation of this document, a child must first be certified to have a disability and that they would benefit from special education. The law has given the responsibility of locating and evaluating such a child to the state. Parents may also contact the state and request for an evaluation. School administrators can only do so if they have consent from parents.

The evaluation process is conducted once a request has been put in by the parents. The results of this evaluation are what will determine whether or not the child is eligible for special education. They also guide the kind of education that will be offered. In instances where the parents disagree with the evaluation report, the law provides for a resolution mechanism; such parents may apply for an independent evaluation.

For a student that is found to be eligible (have disability as defined by the law), a meeting to write the IEP should be held within 30 calendar days. The school system is charged with the responsibility of scheduling for this meeting. The school administration is required to ensure that all the participants are contacted and notified of the meeting. Parents should be made aware of all the attendees.

The document that is created is usually quite detailed. It discusses the academic and social aspects of the child in question. Among the things that have to be brought out is how the child is performing in the current program. An analysis of classroom test results has to be done to determine this. Annual goals comprising of several short term objectives need to be stated as these will be used to evaluate progress. The nature of the special education needed forms the bulk of content.

The school leadership needs to make sure that all the instructions are carried out as stated in the document. One of the ways of making sure that this happens is to make copies and to avail them to all the important stakeholders. Without teamwork, the objectives of this program may not be achieved.
