Convenience And Beauty With Moth Orchids

By Sharon Roberts

Who doesn't like flowers? They are beautiful to look at and they often saturate their surroundings with perfumed scents. The most beautiful ones however, tend to require a lot of work. Moth Orchids are among the preferred flowers for novice and professional horticulturalists alike because unlike other horticultural beauties they are very low maintenance.

The flower's moth-like appearance earned it the name. As a matter of fact the name is directly derived from a Greek word, phalluna which means moth. It is a species that comprises about sixty sub species. The flower is Asian in origin but it has gained such widespread popularity that it is cultivated in locations around the globe.

These flowers whose scientific name is Phalaenopsis come in a wide array of colors. These colors include green, purple, orange and pink. Additionally there are some varieties that feature an intricate pattern of shades. This makes the plant quite appealing to those who love variety. For decorators they are like a painters palette, source from which endless color combinations can be found.

These flowers are great for formal and informal decorative purposes. They add comfort and tranquility to the office space. When used for special events they help to establish a setting that exudes elegance. One of the popular uses of this flower is in wedding decoration. Unique bridal bouquets are created with complimenting color palettes. Center pieces that adorn the bridal party's table or the dining tables at the reception are also breathtakingly beautiful when these flowers are used.

Even though they are quite exotic in appearance, the flowers need very little support to survive and this is one reason modern day flowers lovers love them so much. Low maintenance is a very important quality in today's fast paced environment. The flowers are perfect as they flourish well with limited attention and never fail to provide astounding beauty.

Environments that have low concentrations of sunlight are perfect for this plant. The original environments in which they thrived features limited sunlight. In the home they are best located by windows that admit a small amount of sunlight. In the open they thrive best in the shade of taller plants. The fact that very little sunlight is required makes it easy for people in non tropical environments to grow the plants. Sunlight replacement such as UV lighting can do the trick as well.

Being tropical in origin the pant requires ample amounts of water. It does not store sufficient water in its body as it has only a single stem. This means that a steady supply of water is required for its survival. A simple drip system could suffice if daily watering is not possible. This drip system may be as simple as a small bottle punctured to release water slowly and laid in the flower pot in the home setting or an intricate drip piping system for larger horticulturalists.

The Phalaenopsis is quite a magnificent plant. It provides mankind with elegant beauty and all it requires is a little attention. In short it is essentially what horticulturalists call the perfect flower.
