Information In Using Quality Concrete Slabs

By Frank Foster

Concrete slabs are common elements of structure in modern buildings which are often used for floor and ceiling construction reinforced by steel. The thinner ones could be used for paving the exterior under the main floor slabs or crawl spaces. They can either be supported by foundations or placed on the subsoil directly for most industrial and domestic structures.

Most contractors choose them for their attractive and durable surface that could be easily maintained and their inexpensiveness. Your company might be one among the users of concrete slabs Mandeville meant for your construction projects. Here are some things to know in helping your projects in cities like Mandeville, LA to be built with quality.

Remove first all soft soils, vegetation and rocks for the slabs to be supported uniformly when putting them there. Place the concrete at a firm and undisturbed ground if possible so it could properly stay in place. Set forms to let their surface slope for two percent at least in providing the area of an adequate drainage.

A lumber with an identical specified thickness for the slab can be used as scratch template and have stakes attached on its surface at top. Placing a string line across the top is possible also of these forms for ensuring proper thickness. Acquire an entrained air concrete if flatwork will become exposed to deicing chemicals, thawing and freezing.

A material that has minimum cementitious should be specified with relation to the maximum aggregate size to ensure the durability and finish is good. Do not use high slump concretes and control with the truck the additions of water. Because high slump admixtures can become detrimental and result with an increased warping due to a greater paste content at the upper portion compared to the lower one.

Wet concretes should not be allowed to stay in contact with your skin, enter boots or saturate clothing while placing or finishing them. Strike the surface off while you keep a small amount in front of straightedge in filling in low spots. This would help in preventing birdbaths from forming on the finished surface when they dry.

Use darby or bullfloat on the surface before the concretes are beginning to bleed or excess moisture appears to level ridges and fill voids. Any finishing operation must not be performed when bleed water is still present. Dust drying the cement is not advised when you want the bleed water to be soaked up.

Use groover to make contraction joints while concretes are fresh still and the depth should be quarter of its thickness. Conventional saw or early cut one can be used in sawing the joints that prevents cracking when done early. Concretes with an entrained air must not be steel troweled as this might cause the surface to deteriorate.

After finishing operation is done then immediately start curing concrete with various available methods according to what season it is. Wet curing methods must be used when freezing and thawing cycles are in the area and do it at fall. This allows drying for them to finish before first freezing arrives.
