If you are fortunate enough to inherit an original timber/log floor or are looking to restore a floor you covered years ago with carpet, you may need to carry out some repairs. This may involve replacing sections of the old floor with new material.

Solid wood floors are made of timber that are between 1/4" and 1" in thickness. It is the most durable, best-wearing floor that stays put for long. The boards are fitted together and are then nailed down to 3/4" plywood sub floor. Owing to the fact that you cannot nail into solidified concrete, the solid timber floor can't be fitted over such a floor without connecting a timber sub floor. This makes it a bit costly and the floor is elevated slightly.

With a concrete sub floor, an engineered flooring is the best to use. Naturally, varying temperature causes solid timber to expand and contract accordingly. Therefore, it is not the best to use in places which experience sharp changes with regards to temperature. An advantage of solid timber floor is that it comes in a variety of lengths, stains, widths, and finishes.

Why it is important to hire a professional? With the ever increasing number of DIY shows on television, a lot of people are attempting to restore their own wood floors only to find it's not as easy as it looks on television. Professional wooden floor restoration companies will have invested in the right machinery for the job and also in the right training.

Mosaic Panels Mosaic Panels, also known as finger parquet, is an old style of flooring used a lot in the 1960's and is available in Mahogany, European Oak, Teak and Merbau. If fitting mosaic panels to a wood or concrete base, an epoxy glue should be used but if the panels have a felt backing then a spirit based adhesive should be used.

End grain block floors. This type of floor is available in a number of log species including European Larch, European Smoked Oak, European Oak, Pine and Spruce. The log is cut across the growth rings to produce a very different look to that achieved using the more usual strip floor. It is extremely hard wearing and so is ideal for areas that experience a lot of foot traffic.

However, impregnated floors do not exhibit the characteristics of modern real wood floors. However, they are a less costly, durable alternative that is widely used in comparison to simple carpeting.
